A lot has been said about the perils of the internet. While a large majority of users turn to the internet for work, communications and entertainment; a good number of others see the internet as an effective tool for conducting fraudulent business or worse; to serve their own selfish, deceitful motives.

With children online protection may not seem such an important thing and this laxity may very well keep them open to online dangers. Unfortunately, a good number of parents or guardians also do not think that there is a need for such online protection and herein lies the danger.

Heed the Warning Before It’s Too Late

Parents whose kids have been victimized one way or another through their online activities realized only too late that with children online protection is a must. This is even more significant for teens as they are in the experimental and curious stages of their lives.

These stages render them vulnerable to online attacks. With these in mind, parents should heed the warning about the risks involved in online surfing without any type of protective measure in place before it’s too late.

Potential Dangers of Online Surfing

Adults have been known to fall for online scams and fall victim to online predators. If grown-ups can fall prey to the dangers in cyberspace, kids are even more vulnerable.

This being said, it is even more evident that with children online protection is definitely needed in order to keep them off harm’s way.

What are the potential dangers of online surfing?

On top of the list are sexual predators using the internet as their very convenient means of luring kids into their trap. Next comes falling for online scams.

You know those things advertised in websites where they say that you have just been picked as an online winner or that with just a few simple steps, you can be the recipient of huge sums of money? There’s a very big chance that these are scams to get your personal data, financial status and your credit card numbers.

Kids will of course be excited to learn that they have won something online without even doing anything or actually joining any type of contest. Often, these scams will require personal information, bank details and/or credit card numbers before you can actually claim your prize.

Online harassment in the form of bullying, eliciting fear from the victim and manipulating the victim to do something objectionable are also common online dangers.

The Need for Online Protection

With children online protection is an important issue that parents need to discuss with them. Unless they fully understand that there is a need for them to protect themselves online, the kids may not be so accommodating with the online safety measures that their parents have put in place.

It cannot be emphasized enough that with children online protection may just be the thing that can save them from online humiliation, manipulation and the many dangers of surfing the internet.

When parents work closely together with their children online protection, in whatever form you deem appropriate will ensure that the kids are safe even without you around monitoring their online activities all the time.

The Internet has become virtually indispensable in today’s Information Age. That being said, there are questionable and inappropriate sites for kids on the Net. Here are some tips on how to keep kids safe online.

Keep Personal Information Offline

Tell the child that personal information must never be given on the Web, especially strangers. Personal info will include your home address, phone number, their school location, bank account number and any other info you deem should be kept confidential.

Be honest with the child. Tell them that just as you would not tell these things to strangers on the street, the same rule applies with online people they just met.

Kids and Social Networks

If the child has a social network account (i.e., on Facebook or Twitter), create an account too and asked to be added as a friend. This is one of the best ways to keep kids safe online. This way you will know who they are interacting with on the social networking sites.

Do not tell them not to use Facebook, Twitter etc. This will only make them more curious. Also, these social networks do have benefits as it helps them socialize. If you have an account, everything should be fine.

Make sure that the settings for the social networking site are appropriate. Ask them to check their settings. Inform them what they are about so they will know what it is about.

Learn to Use the Web

A lot of online problems can be avoided if parents learn how to use the Internet. Don’t be intimidated by the Web. If you know how to use social networks, you don’t have to worry endlessly about what your child is doing.

If possible, put the computer in the living room. This will help you keep an eye on what the child is doing. It’s okay to join in. If your child is watching videos, go watch it with them. Ask in a casual way what they did on the Net today. Don’t interrogate them; just ask.

Safety Software

There are many computer programs designed to keep kids safe online. These are capable of blocking pornographic and other objectionable websites. These programs can be configured so you can determine what levels of protection are necessary.

Finally, keep the communications line open between you and the child. Be honest. Tell them that while the Net is useful and fun, there are unscrupulous and even dangerous people there.
